Second Chance Careers in the Trades
A juvenile record or a charge does not close the door on the trades. Employers hire for skills and reliability, apprenticeships pay from day one, and there are programs built for young people who have been through the justice system. Here is the straight path forward.
Why the Trades Are the Realistic Path
Skills over background. Pass the aptitude test, show up, do the work. The trades judge what you can do, not where you have been.
Paid from day one. Registered apprenticeships are jobs, not school. Wages start immediately with scheduled raises.
A real shortage. Contractors with open helper and apprentice spots are looking for people who will show up. That is the whole interview.
Juvenile records are treated differently. In most states a juvenile record can be sealed or expunged, often at 18 or a set time after the case closes. Rules vary by state, so ask a counselor or legal aid office what applies to you.
Licensing is usually possible. Most trade licensing boards review a record case by case, and many states no longer allow a blanket denial.
Programs Built for You
YouthBuild. A free program for ages 16 to 24 that combines hands-on construction training with finishing your diploma or GED. YouthBuild welcomes young people who have been involved with the justice system and helps with housing, childcare, and transportation.
Job Corps. Free residential career training for ages 16 to 24 with tracks in construction, electrical, welding, and more. Eligibility is checked case by case, and many young people with a record qualify.
The Federal Bonding Program and WOTC. Once you are working age, your American Job Center can issue a free fidelity bond that covers your employer for the first six months, and employers can claim a federal tax credit for hiring someone within a year of a conviction or release. You can tell a hiring manager about both.

Use this in the interview: "I am in a pre-apprenticeship, I have my OSHA 10, and the Federal Bonding Program covers you at no cost." Employers respond to solved problems.
Your Path Forward, Step by Step
1. Talk to one adult who can open doors. A school counselor, a probation officer, or the youth program at your American Job Center. The WIOA youth program serves ages 16 to 24 and counts justice involvement as a reason to help you first.
2. Pick your trade.
